King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and St Thomas' Hospital NHS Foundation Trust are two of London's largest and busiest teaching hospitals, with a unique profile of strong local services and a focused set of specialist services.
King's has a Foetal Medicine Unit, Liver Transplant Unit and a large Obstetric department, is South East England's largest Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and is one of four designated Major Trauma Centre's in London. St Thomas' has a large Kidney transplant unit, Evelina children's hospital, Urology, Oncology, Gastroenterology, ENT and Heart surgery. Infection Sciences on both sites are IBMS approved for pre-registration training in Virology/Microbiology and are ISO 15189 accredited. An exciting opportunity for an experienced HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist has now arisen in Infection Sciences to support the Cross-site Service Delivery Manager.
Applications are invited from HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists who have extensive managerial experience at a senior level in a clinical diagnostic Microbiology, Virology and Molecular - Infection Sciences Department.
Previous experience at senior level in staff management and laboratory processes are essential, ideal candidate would have managed a laboratory and have budget management experience. Experience in business development and customer service would be an advantage.
The successful candidate would be expected to work across King's College Hospital and St Thomas' Hospital as deputy to the Service Delivery Manager for Infection Sciences. Managing laboratory processes and staff within the departments adhering to Viapath personnel policies and procedures. Both Infection Sciences departments consist of Microbiology, Virology and Infectious Diseases consultants, Registrars, Clinical Scientists and a team of other Healthcare Scientists, supported by Health & Safety, Training, Quality Managers, Administrative & Clerical team and Viapath corporate services. These include Transformation, Finance, Procurement, Business Development, HR and IT.
The teams manage a workload of 1,300,000 samples of increasing complexity that requiring sophisticated laboratory processing and interpretation. The routine diagnostic work includes general bacteriology, MRSA, CRE, VRE, C.auris screening, enteric, C.diff and CRE molecular, serology, hepatitis and retrovirus serology, and an extensive repertoire of molecular based tests which include both qualitative and quantitative assays as well as antiretroviral resistance testing using automated sequence analysis and MALDI-TOF, employing a range of different platforms and technologies underpinned by our Service Development research.
In addition, all Chlamydia trachomatis and N gonorrhea tests are carried out by APTIMA (TMA) technology on genital swab / urine samples using the Hologic Panther system. Both departments receive specimens from a number of external microbiology laboratories for investigation.
This is a fantastic and exciting opportunity for a self-motivated individual to lead a dedicated and friendly team across two sites supporting the Service Delivery Manager.
