King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is one of London’s largest and busiest teaching hospitals, with a unique profile of strong local services and a focused set of specialist services. King’s has a Foetal Medicine Unit, Liver Transplant Unit and a large Obstetric department, is South East England’s largest Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and is one of four designated Major Trauma Centre’s in London. We are also IBMS approved for pre-registration training in microbiology. An exciting opportunity for an experienced HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist specialising in microbiology has now arisen to lead the microbiology department as Operations Manager. Applications are invited from HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists who have completed their IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Microbiology, or who possess an equivalent qualification and can demonstrate a broad level of microbiology, operational and managerial experience at a senior level in a clinical diagnostic microbiology/infection sciences department.
To have significant previous experience at senior level in staff management is essential, implementation of IT laboratory processes would be an advantage. The successful candidate would be expected to manage the day to day laboratory processes and staff within the department, have a strong operational background. The post holder will also be expected to adhere to Viapath personnel policies and procedures.
The microbiology department consists of five Consultant Virologists, Registrars, a Principal Clinical Scientist and a team of other Healthcare Scientists, supported by a Health & Safety Officer, Training Officer, Quality Manager and Administrative & Clerical team. The team manages a workload of 350,000 samples of increasing complexity and requiring sophisticated laboratory processing and interpretation.
