The Blood Sciences Laboratory at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals is looking for a committed and enthusiastic Clinical Scientist to join our dynamic team in Routine Chemistry. Based mainly at St. Thomas’, the post-holder will contribute clinically and scientifically to the biochemistry service for two of London’s leading teaching hospitals, delivering specialist testing and care of complex patients.
The Automated Chemistry (Blood Sciences) laboratory offers more than 125 routine and specialised UKAS accredited tests across 7 laboratories. These include high-throughput Roche laboratories at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals; HbA1c analysis in the main laboratory and in our innovative near-patient testing laboratories in the Diabetes Clinics at Guy’s and St. Thomas’; first trimester screening in a near-patient testing laboratory in the Fetal Medicine Unit at St. Thomas’; a SAS Lipid laboratory and an intraoperative PTH service at St. Thomas’.
You will be involved in all aspects of our comprehensive Clinical Biochemistry service and will contribute to the Duty Biochemist service on a weekly basis. The Duty Biochemist service offers exposure to a wide variety of clinical and scientific scenarios, and is valued by both our hospital and primary care colleagues. An important aspect of this role will be providing clinical and scientific support for the laboratory referral service (“Sendaways”), as part of a small and friendly Sendaways team comprising Clinical Scientists, Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants. You will also be involved in the upgrade of the main laboratory analytical platform, due to go live in Autumn 2021, by providing scientific support for assay and equipment verification. The Clinical Scientist team have good relationships with our clinical colleagues, particularly the Endocrine Department, and there is opportunity to attend multidisciplinary meetings and clinical case discussions.
You will be responsible for maintaining and developing a high standard of professional expertise, whilst delivering the high quality laboratory service for which we are renowned. In return we can offer support and development as part of a committed and proactive team, with opportunities for personal and professional development, including participation in FRCPath tutorials, case discussions and conference attendances.
Your development and learning:
